'Future Man' Season 3 promos see Josh, Tiger and Wolf meet Gandhi, Jesus and Abraham Lincoln as time
Hulu's 'Future Man' has always been one of those underrated sci-fi comedies, despite each season being stronger than the last. But it is a comedy gem for those who are addicted to 80s sci-fi action films from Schwarzenegger's oeuvre to lighter fare like the 'Back to the Future' films.
With bonafide geek humorists, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (who also appears as 'Susan' on the show), taking up directing duties, you get nerdy easter egg references, plenty of d**k jokes and general irreverence towards historical and religious figures. In its last and third season, the mayhem seems to be have been kicked up a notch.
Josh Hutcherson, the show's main lead, has already said in an interview that it is his favorite season of all three in the series. He said: "I think that we kind of found where we want these characters stories to end and sort of worked backward from there creatively. It's a very cohesive season and extremely funny. We basically are crime bandits on the run for breaking time crimes against humanity. It's like jumping through different millennia and all over the world and everything. So it's really fun, really high energy. We go to some very weird places."
The jokes will be, if we go by the promos, just as 'good-weird' as they have been in the last two seasons. Last we saw them, Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson), Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson) had been convicted of time crimes and sentenced to "death by entertainment" in the "DieCathalon", that spoofs the 'Hunger Games' scenario.
As Josh says in the teaser to Tiger and Wolf, "we f**ked up the Universe, I mean, the whole Universe. And this is payback". Hosted by Susan (Seth Rogen) in the year 3491, the games are sponsored by the blood diaper company 'Ultra Max'. Right out of the gate, Josh is struck by a javelin through his shoulder -- where is Katniss when you need her?
But thankfully, the trio manages to steal a time travel device and become "History's Most Wanted fugitives". Susan releases 'Terminator'-like machines to bring them in as the three travel across time and space to meet among others, Gandhi (who Tiger sucker punches), Abraham Lincoln, Jesus, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Bruce Lee.
While their dreams differ from the lofty (avenge comrades) to the whiny (I just want to go home) to the mundane (relaunch a fast-casual restaurant with slightly better food), they are united in their need to survive, which as Tiger remarks, they have gotten very good at.
Since their pursuers have orders to kill them on sight, our fugitives on the run with their stolen time device could end up "breaking time" with their time jumps. But not before they hack their enemies and see their blood splatter like a "party spray".
Season 3 is, as the creators put it, "The Final Climax". It is the last time we'll see these memorable characters on our screens. The eight episodes that will drop on April 3 on Hulu look like binge-able comedy gold that is perfect for our current lockdown situation.
