Jorge Masvidal’s Early Career
Masvidal made his MMA debut on May 24, 2003, with a knockout at HOOKnSHOOT: Absolute Fighting Championships 3. On April 30, he competed in the main fight of the Absolute Fighting Championships XII event against current UFC contender and The Ultimate Fighter 5 contestant Joe Lauzon. Masvidal won the second round through technical knockout. Masvidal was 3-0 in the now-defunct BodogFIGHT organization, with wins over Keith Wisniewski and Steve Berger, as well as a head-kick knockout of PRIDE Fighting Championships and UFC veteran Yves Edwards.
Bellator
Masvidal joined Bellator in April 2009 and competed in their lightweight tournament. Masvidal won his debut fight at Bellator 1 via TKO in the first round against Nick Agallar. However, in Bellator 5, he was defeated in the semifinals by Toby Imada, who won through inverted triangle choke submission in the third round. This shocking defeat was named Submission of the Year by numerous significant MMA media publications, including Sherdog, MMA Fighting, and World MMA Awards. Masvidal challenged and beat Eric Reynolds in a 160-pound catchweight fight at Bellator 12 by rear-naked choke submission. In September 2010, Masvidal stepped up to the welterweight class to face Paul Daley at Shark Fights 13 in Amarillo, Texas. After Daley failed to make weight, the contest was changed to a catchweight of 171.75 pounds, with Daley forfeiting 10% of his show fee to Masvidal. Daley won a unanimous judgment over Masvidal. Masvidal joined Strikeforce after this performance.
StrikeForce
Masvidal made his Strikeforce debut in early 2011, taking on Billy Evangelista at Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson. He was victorious by unanimous decision. Masvidal then competed in a number one contender’s match against former Elite XC Lightweight Champion K. J. Noons. Masvidal won by unanimous decision after putting Noons down and nearly ending him in the first round.
Masvidal fought Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship on December 17, 2011, at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, CA. He was defeated by a unanimous decision. Following the championship fight, Masvidal faced Justin Wilcox on July 14, 2012, at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy. He won the bout by unanimous decision.
Masvidal was scheduled to meet Bobby Green at Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir on November 3, 2012, however, the fight was canceled along with the show. Masvidal was set to meet Pat Healy at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine in place of the injured Gilbert Melendez. However, owing to a back ailment, he was forced to withdraw and was replaced by Kurt Holobaugh.
